Damage to the spinal cord has many effects

Motor vehicle accidents can lead to many types of injuries, including ones to the spinal cord. When you are facing this type of injury, you have to know some basic information about them. Not all spinal cord injuries are the same. The location and the type of injury both have an impact on what effects you will have to deal with.

The location is important because the area of the body that is affected by it will always be lower than the spot of the spine that suffered the injury. This means that injuries to the neck will produce more widespread problems than one to the lower back.

When the spinal cord is injured, it isn’t just the limbs that are affected. The internal organs are also impacted. An injury to the neck or upper spine could mean that you have to rely on ventilator support because your lungs are paralyzed. This is what happened to Christopher Reeve when he suffered his cervical spine injury when he fell from a horse.

Some injuries don’t result in the full loss of feeling and voluntary movement below the level of the injury. These are known as incomplete injuries and are usually associated with better healing than their counterpart, the complete injury. A complete injury doesn’t have any voluntary movement or sensation below the site of the injury.

Even when there is healing and recovery of function after the spinal cord injury, it can be difficult to continue living as you did before the wreck. This can lead to financial difficulties if you are unable to work. You might decide that you are going to seek compensation from the driver who struck you, but be sure you don’t wait too long since there are time limits for filing this type of case.
