Kentucky prefers parents work together on custody matters

The parenting relationships of divorced individuals is much different now than what it was a few decades ago. Back then, there was usually a presumption that the kids were better off with the mother unless there was a situation involving abuse or something similar present. These days, laws tend to give both parents an equal footing in child custody matters.

Kentucky laws regarding child custody are interesting because they encourage parents to work as a team. The court will usually request the parents come up with a parenting plan by working together. This can be done with a mediator, but that’s not always necessary.

When you’re working out the terms of the child custody matter with your ex, you need to ensure that you remain respectful. This can help keep things calm, which can make it easier to come to an agreement now and to work together to rear the children in the future. If you and your ex can’t come to an agreement, the court will step in and make the decisions about what’s going to happen.

You have to ensure that you aren’t pulling the children into disagreements you have with your ex. Kids shouldn’t ever have to play messengers between their parents. They should be allowed to enjoy their childhood even though you and your ex split up.

Once the parenting plan is set, the court will review it and determine if it’s in the child’s best interests or not. The plan must be tailored to what they need now. As they grow up, you can also seek a modification so that the plan suits the child’s current needs.
